“Basque country is strikingly different than the rest of Spain. “
-Nabila
When people ask me “How is Spain” I hesitate with my response because I live in San Sebastian-Donostia located in northern Spain aka “Basque Country.” In my opinion, Basque country is strikingly different than the rest of Spain.
Defying the Spanish stereotypes of “ loud, expressive, open, and overall full of life” kind of people. Basque come off as cold and reserved to an outsider. Though within their circle of friends aka “Kuidrilla” you can hear them two blocks away cackling over a beer sharing the highlights of their day.
As my Basque colleague expressed “It is rare… but it is possible to be adopted into a “Kuidrilla.”
I am still up for adoption….
On a happier note, Basque country is best known for it’s incredible skyline beach and it is gastronomy. San Sebastian was originally a hidden getaway for royalty. The city remains as one of the luxurious parts of spain making it the most expensive region.
According to chefs from across the globe, San Sebastian offers the best “Pintxos” in the world. Pintxos are similar to bite size portions that are commonly enjoyed along side your drink of choice and good conversation.
The Basque people take pride in their language (Euskara) and culture in which has endured many years of oppression. Between the years 1939-1975 dictator Francisco Franco ruled over Spain. Franco banned all other spoken languages other than Espanol. Since the end of his rule, the Basque official language “Euskara” is now taught in school alongside Spanish and English.
What do you think your schooling would have been like learning three languages at once?
